Northampton's Dr Who enjoying 'excellent adventure'

Northampton actor Matt Smith has started filming Doctor Who alongside the actress who will play his companion in the BBC One hit drama.

Pictures have been released showing the Great Billing actor on set in Cardiff, where the cult show is filmed, with actress Karen Gillan.

The 13-part series will not be on television until next year and Mr Smith will appear in a number of regeneration scenes alongside the 10th Doctor, David Tennant.

Mr Smith, aged 26, who was virtually unknown when cast in the role, said: "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

"The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen, Steven (Moffat, executive director) and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable.

"I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

Miss Gillan's character Amy Pond will meet the 11th Doctor in the first episode of the new series. Mr Smith's incarnation of the time lord will wear a tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots.

Executive producer Mr Moffat will take over from outgoing Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies, who brought the show back to the BBC. He said: "Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way."

Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, said: "I am thrilled that a whole new generation of children will forever say that their Doctor was the wonderful Matt Smith."

Before the series starts, David Tennant will bow out in three one-off episodes, with The Waters Of Mars scheduled to air in the autumn.
