The town’s top football braggers could net themselves a £1,000 prize as part of a Northampton pub competition to find the most elaborate goal celebration.

To mark the start of the new football season, the Old Bank pub in St Giles Square is searching for the town’s most over-the-top amateur soccer celebrant.

The twist is, the Greene Kin-owned venue is looking for fans to submit their best recorded celebrations performed by people watching the beautiful game, rather than those playing it.

The company has teamed up with former Fulham and Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard to launch the questionably-titled ‘CeleBEERtion’ competition and has stumped up a £1,000 prize.

Offering his tips on the perfect goal celebration, Bullard said: “It’s hard to beat the excitement you feel when your team scores. Apart from the stadium, there’s no better place to watch a game than down the pub, so we want to find the best Northampton football fan celebrations.

“Whether you pull your shirt over your head like Ravenelli, do the Peter Crouch robot, or your own unique move, we want to see it.”

Bullard’s 2009 goal celebration mocking his Hull City manager Phil Brown is often recalled by fans arguing over memorable celebrations.

The competition is being launched through the Old Bank’s Season Ticket discount card, which offers guests 10 per cent off selected drinks during live football.

General manager at the Old Bank, Anna Brewer, said: “We know that nothing beats getting together with your mates to watch a match in the pub. The football season is well underway and we really want our guests to show their support for the beautiful game.

“We’ve seen some fantastic celebrations over the years from our guests, so know that Northampton’s got talent.”

To enter the competition, football fans need to upload their goal celebrations to the ‘Season Ticket’ Facebook page www.facebook.com/GKSeasonTicket before Sunday, October 2.
