A 23-year-old Northampton man who attacked a stranger in a pub and then kicked a police officer in the face has been jailed.

Lee Bushell, of Byfield Road, St James, Northampton, was in the Pickled Pig in Towcester in the early hours of March 21 when he pushed a man who then fell into a woman, causing her to fall to the ground.

Northampton Crown Court heard the woman’s partner then complained to Bushell and he then pulled the man to the floor.

James Van Der Swart, prosecuting, said the victim suffered a four-inch wound to the back of his ear after Bushell hit him with a glass and stamped on his head.

Police were called out to the pub and, during the course of being arrested, Bushell kicked out at the face of a police officer.

The court heard the police officer suffered two broken teeth, which required dental surgery to repair.

Mark Nicholls, mitigating, said Bushell was “deeply ashamed” of his actions and had not drunk alcohol since the incident.

His Honour Judge Michael Fowler, sentencing, said Bushell had committed an episode of “mindless violence” when he was drunk and “throwing his weight around”.

Bushell was given a jail sentence of one year and eight months. He is likely to serve half before being released on licence.
