A man from Northampton has cycled 170 miles in memory of his cat on what would have been his 14th birthday.

James Donaldson from Kingsthorpe had four cats, all named after favourite places, but Formby died aged 13.

Mr Donaldson decided to raise sponsorship money for Cats Protection and set off from his home on his bike on Saturday morning, arriving in Formby, Merseyside, on Sunday afternoon.

He said: “I’m a keen cyclist and Formby was loved by everyone in the family. Sunday would have been his 14th birthday but he died earlier this year.

“Everyone really misses Formby and I wanted to do something to remember him.

“The journey was long and hard but it was all worth it to raise money for a really good cause.”

Mr Donaldson’s other three cats, named after places special to him and his wife, are Paisley, Preston and Ibiza.
