Northampton headteacher says pupil made "innocent but potentially dangerous mistake" by bringing tool into school

One concerned mum got in touch with the Chronicle & Echo after she was told a pupil at St Lukes Church of England Primary School in Duston had a knife.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, heard the news second-hand from another parent last Friday (March 24) but the incident happened more than two weeks prior.

She said: "The school have not told any parents at all, they should have mentioned it happened. They have kept it under wraps.

"All I know that the parent was told the child had a knife."

The school has confirmed that the police and appropriate authorities were notified.

Headteacher at St Lukes Church of England Primary School Sonia Clews said in a statement: "I can confirm that there was an incident where a camping tool, which he had been given by a Scouting group as a reward, was brought into school by one of our children on the March 6.

"This was an innocent but potentially dangerous mistake made by the child. The incident was dealt with immediately once staff were made aware, according to the school’s behaviour and safeguarding policies.

"The family and all appropriate agencies were notified and we have continued to work closely with them. In this month’s newsletter we are reminding parents about ensuring items that children bring into school from home are appropriate."

Northamptonshire Police have been approached for further comment.
