Mr Hilton, who moved to Northampton four years ago, said he had always grown the plants, which have spiky green foliage but had only ever seen them flower twice, once in 1984 and again this year.

He said: “It is amazing. It is probably the last time I will see it flower in my life-time.

“I have grown Yucca plants for 30 years and only on two occasions have I seen them flower.

“I spotted the flower four weeks ago and it has shot up really quickly.”
