The BBC has teamed up with Northampton College to give 50 young people the chance to secure the job of their dreams thanks to a new digital traineeship programme.
The ‘Make It Digital’ scheme, which launches next month, will see 25 young people in Northampton and another 25 in Kettering given the opportunity to complete an eight week course, split between college and an employer.
The students will learn the skills they need to carry out a series of workplace tasks, from building web pages and filming viral videos to implementing social media campaigns and creating email newsletters.
Assistant Principal James Whybrow said: “Digital is a huge growth industry and young people are perfectly placed to help push the sector even further.
“This generation has grown up with digital, it’s part and parcel of their everyday lives and the technology involved is second nature to them.
“This programme is a tremendous opportunity for employers to get some of our brightest young brains into business, giving them a platform to showcase their skills and help modernise the workplace.
“We are delighted to have been chosen by the BBC to take part in the programme and look forward to getting both employers and young people on board.”
Young people aged between 16 and 24 can apply for the course, which will see them study in college for four weeks before embarking on a three-week work placement with a local employer to put into practice the skills they have learnt. They will spend the final week of the programme back in college reviewing what they have learnt.
Nationally, the programme aims to attract up to 5,000 employable, digitally savvy young people, who will be a great asset to companies large and small right across the UK.
Make It Digital launches on August 17 with a webinar hosted by BBC presenter and host of TV’s Dragons’ Den Evan Davies.
The College is also looking for employers of all sizes from across different sectors to host the trainees and benefit from their contribution.
There will be an information session on Tuesday, 11 August from 9.30am to 11.30am at Northampton College’s Booth Lane campus.
