The Northampton Borough Council Labour group has announced Les Marriott as its new leader.

Councillor Marriott has been the Mayor of Northampton for the past year but steps down from that role next week.

He will take over from Councillor Terry Wire, who is currently battling cancer and has decided to stand down.

Councillor Lee Mason will stay on as Deputy Leader and Councillor David Palethorpe, who defected from the Conservatives in December 2011, has been appointed the new Chief Whip.

Councillor Marriott, who has served on the borough council for 15 years, said: “I am pleased to become Leader of the Labour Group and I look forward to working with Labour colleagues in the build up to the election next year.

“The Labour Group will offer a future direction for the Council and the town and we shall listen to the priorities of local residents.

“I want to see much more high quality and secure jobs in the Northampton area and will work towards achieving that goal. ”

Councillor Mason said: “Les takes over from Terry at an interesting time with elections now fast approaching. He will make a great Leader and I know he is looking forward to ensuring Labour offers a new vision for the future direction of our town.”
