Northampton-based Nationwide staff give 8,000 hours to good causes and raise more than £100,000

More than £102,000 was raised for good causes by Northampton-based Nationwide staff in 2014/15, a report by the building society has shown.

The announcement came as Nationwide announced record mortgage lending for the first half of the year and a 27 percent increase in underlying profit to £801 million.

The building society said that it was currently recruiting for 40 new roles to add to the 2,500 staff based in the town.

A spokesman said: “As a major employer in the area, Nationwide continues to play a big part in the local community.

“Nationwide employees in Northampton have raised more than £102,000 for charities in the region this financial year, including £5,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In total, Nationwide employees have clocked up more than 8,000 hours of volunteering time in the Northampton area.

“Nationwide employs more than 2,500 people in and around Northampton and is committed to supporting the region’s economy and job market. As the society goes from strength-to-strength Nationwide is recruiting more employees and is currently looking to recruit to 40 posts in Northampton,” he said.

Customers in the Northampton area have a combined total of £2,569,727,348 in Nationwide savings accounts and 17,018 savings accounts have been opened by people living in Northampton in the six months between April and September.

Nationwide’s CEO Graham Beale said: “This has been our best-ever half year of mortgage lending along with a strong inflow of savings and the opening of over a quarter of a million new current accounts.
