Non-hospital nurses invited to work shifts at NGH

Hospital bosses in Northampton are encouraging all types of nurses to join its staff ‘bank’ to help reduce its huge agency bill.

The hospital is offering skills assessments and tailored support to local registered nurses who would like to work occasional shifts at the hospital in addition to their main job.

Carolyn Fox, director of nursing, said: “Our bank is made up of our existing staff nurses who like the option to work extra shifts on top of their rostered hours as well nurses who prefer the variety and flexibility of working only for the bank.

“However, we recognise that there are registered nurses working in the community in non-acute settings who might relish the professional challenge of working in a busy hospital environment.

“We can offer them a skills assessment to work out where their individual skills and experience would be put to best use in the hospital.

“If there’s a specialism or department they’re keen to work in to get new skills, we’ll put together a personalised support and training programme.

“We have a huge variety of nursing posts including general nursing, emergency care, midwifery or any of our areas of specialism which include stroke, cardiac, vascular and renal.

“You don’t need to have previous hospital experience to work for our bank, you simply need to be a registered nurse who shares our commitment to compassionate care.

Nurses who register with the NGH nurse bank provide temporary cover where there is a short-term increase in work or a short-term deficit in staff due to vacancies.

Bank nurses are employed by the hospital and the better resourced the nurse bank is, the less reliance there is on more costly agency staff.

Mrs Fox said: “We also want to reach out to agency nurses who are facing uncertain times as a result of the Government’s new cap on agency spending.

“With hospitals throughout the UK working to reach their targets on reduced agency spend, this is the ideal time for agency nurses to come and talk to us.

“We pay competitive hourly rates, we can help with revalidation and we offer free clinical skills training for agency nurses who register on our bank from October.”

In addition to support and training programmes, NGH bank nurses can access the NHS pension scheme and join the newly-refurbished on-site gym and swimming pool.
