The owner of a Northampton shop, where bins were left to overflow so badly some called for it to be shut down, says it will never happen again after new management was put in place.

The Maxxi Save European Supermarket on the corner of Bruce Street and Weedon Road, St James, was heavily criticised by the local residents’ association earlier this month.

Bins outside the premises were left overflowing with detritus, which led St James Residents’ Association to call for the premises to be immediately closed.

But store co-owner Cagdas Tasan has vowed to make the waste problem a thing of the past.

He said the rubbish was not collected from the side of the store because the bin contractors had not been paid under the previous management.

The shop is now under new management, which he says will bring improvements inside the store, which also features a butchers, a bakery and a greengrocers.

He said: “Everything is paid up to date now, everything is going to be collected.

“There’s not going to be any mess at all outside, the shop is going to look nice.”

Chairman of the St James Residents Association Graham Croucher first mounted complaints about the Euro supermarket in an open letter to local St James Councillor Rufia Ashraf and the borough’s cabinet member for environment, Councillor Alan Bottwood, on October 17.

He claimed the overflowing bins were a sign a “litter-free” zone established by Councillor Ashraf along the Weedon road, was not working.

In the letter he said: “I call for immediate remedial action taken to clear the rubbish mountain, and legal sanction taken against the owner of this shop. As a matter of extreme urgency the warden should be visiting the premises and enforcing the law and ordering the clearance of this pile of decaying waste.”

But Councillor Ashraf says she welcomes Mr Tasan’s promise to keep the place tidy.

“The litter-free zone is working,” she added. “You are going to get the odd person dropping litter, but people knpwo it is meant to be kept clean.

“I’m pleased that the businesses are taking responsibility.

“I have worked really hard in the area to make improvements.”
