A redesign of a major site for the revitalisation of Daventry includes two supermarkets, six new shops, a hotel, family restaurant, fast food outlet, and a new retirement development.

The updated plans are for ‘Site 5’ which includes land between Warwick Street and the old outdoor pool site.

Details were released today (Wednesday) by Daventry District Council, in partnership with its developer Henry Boot. The proposed plans will now be looked at by DDC’s strategy group next week, and then December’s full council meeting.

A planning application is expected next year, with retailers having a deadline sometime in the summer to subscribe to the plans. Work could begin on site as early as this time next year.

The new food stores are smaller than the original one planned, but the larger of the two would still be similar to Tesco in New Street.

The retirement development will be run by McCarthy and Stone, who are already advertising the development on their website.

Then from left to right is the current cadet hall, family restuarant and newly built Mind building, the hotel, the smaller food unit. Across Braunston Road is the small fast food unit. The larger supermarket is the lefthand part of the large building, with the retail units forming the other part.

Cllr Chris Millar, leader of Daventry District Council, said: “These plans complement our town centre’s existing retail offer and will improve the choice available locally, so we can retain and attract new shoppers and compete with the larger centres of neighbouring towns.

“With an increasing number of people now opting to shop more frequently with ‘top up’ visits instead of the weekly trip to a superstore, the plans aim to reflect this modern-day living.

“These revised plans put a major retail development on the table for Daventry which, subject to all the necessary committee approvals and planning consents, could even be open for trading within the next two years.”

Councillor Millar added: “It’s no secret that in recent years the big supermarket chains have suffered a fall in sales and have been withdrawing from new store acquisitions. A new petrol station is now unlikely to be delivered as part of these revised proposals and we realise that some residents will be disappointed by this, but we hope they will welcome the increased mix of retail and leisure facilities.”
