A new councillor has been decided on by drawing a lot, after both candidates got the same number of votes in a by-election for Daventry Town Council yesterday.

The new member to represent Hill Ward is Independent candidate Zeshan Hussain.

Both candidates received 208 votes in the election so, in line with official procedures, the winner was drawn by lot.

So the final result was Zeshan Hussain received 209 votes compared with 208 received by the Independent candidate Eric Macanndrais.

Turnout at the election was 9.96 per cent and there were five voids.

Zeshan has lived in Daventry all his life, attending William Parker School before studying at university.

He has been actively involved in volunteer projects across Daventry and wants to engage more with the community and make a difference.

He thanked all those who gave up their time to help him with his campaign and also thanked all the people of the ward who exercised their right to vote.
