A thief wrenched a handbag out of a 79-year-old woman’s hands as she walked along a path in Northampton, before riding off on his mountain bike.

The incident took place between Standens Barn shops and Brickwell Court on Saturday evening.

The woman was approached by a man pushing a bike who grabbed hold of her handbag and pulled it out of her hands, at about 7.10pm.

The offender then got on the bike and rode off in the direction of Standens Barn shops.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said he was a “white, tanned man,” in his late 40s to early 50s, of slim to medium build and about 6ft tall, with short dark black hair with grey patches.

He was also wearing a blue and white checked shirt, dark blue jeans with turn ups and black footwear.

The man rode off on a white mountain bike with a blue and white seat, white writing and a brown lock.

Police would like anyone who witnessed the incident or with information call the force non-emergency number on 101, or Crimestoppers oncontact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
