Michael showboating with his dickie bow
HE’S a distinguished chap is that Michael Hill. Here he is showboating with his dickie bow at a knees-up the other night to mark 90 years of the Rotary Club.
Former mayor Michael and wife Margaret look splendid for the occasion, but the question troubling Aufona is what was running through Marg’s mind at the exact moment the camera shutter went. Was it: “You can’t tie a bow like me darling”. Or was it: “Play with it too much sweetie and the elastic’ll snap. Then what would people think . . .” The camera never lies. Allegedly.
WITH the Tories at County Hall facing a by-election next week following the resignation of the Cornish councillor, we are intrigued to see the authority’s website still has Councillor Alan Pote (who? you might well be asking) still down as a Conservative. Alan, who represents Rothwell, got expelled from the party several months ago and doesn’t sit in the Tory ranks any more. It’s especially interesting because, Aufona hears, if the Tories lose one of their seats to independent status, they lose one of their cherished seats on the Northamptonshire Police Authority as well. And that would be an awful blow to Norman Hacker who, naturally, sits on both.
Speaking of the Plod, their press mandarins eventually recovered their composure after sticking this out to the media earlier this week: “Two men have been arrested on suspicion of outraging public indecency on the A43, as part of a proactive operation in the area.” You can almost imagine the doggers and cruisers saying: “I’m indecent but that’s beyond the pale.”

TWO distinguished performances by our MPs in the Commons this week can’t go untouched by Aufona. First up was Binners who, during a Business Questions debate yesterday, claimed the Chancellor had “lost the toolbox” when it came to fixing the economy, strong stuff for a backbencher.
He asked Vince Cable: “As confidence for growth continues to diminish among the small business community, do you share my view that the Chancellor should use more than one tool to get the economy moving? Many, in fact, think he’s lost the toolbox.” We enjoy immensely Binners’ public contributions, but never more so than when he strays off-piste into rebel territory. It keeps up a proud tradition of occasionally troublesome Northampton MPs of the past, including a certain xPcTCxMP (Ind) and he of the colourful public school blazer, Tony Marlow.
The slavishly loyal Michael Ellis, meanwhile, has been limbering up in the Commons. On Monday, he got a bit, well, shouty, during a Commons debate which sparked this intervention from the Speaker John Bercow no less: “Order. Michael Ellis must exercise the kind of restraint that I am sure has characterised his distinguished performances in the law courts over many years”.
At this juncture we can only guess whether Michael a) had the look of a worried schoolboy being sent to the headmaster’s office; b) had the look of a slightly self-satisfied cat that got the cream or c) had a combination of both.
By the way Michael, you do look ever so fetching in those dairy-sponsored Welly boots you were wearing the other day. Very distinguished if we might say so. Love the short back and sides look too . . .
