A man tricked his way into a house by claiming he needed to check a broken water pipe before allowing his accomplice in to steal cash.

The distraction burglary took place between 2.10pm and 2.40pm yesterday (Thursday) in Margaret Avenue, Wellingborough.

A man knocked at the door of an elderly couple and told them there was a broken water pipe that needed to be checked.

He was allowed into the property to check the taps and while this was taking place another person entered the house and took money from a room upstairs.

The man who knocked at the door was white, of stocky build, with a round face, dark hair, clean shaven, and wore a grey zip-up jacket with a red/green logo on the left hand side.

There is no description of the second offender, other than being a man.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the Margaret Avenue area of Wellingborough yesterday afternoon and saw anything suspicious.

They would also like to speak to anyone who may recognise the description of the offender.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
