The incident happened when the van was being driven along Phoenix Park Way towards Lloyds Road in the town.

A spokesman for Northants Police said: “A Peugeot 407 pulled out in front of it which meant it had to brake heavily to avoid a collision.

“The driver of the van flashed its lights and a passenger in the rear of the Peugeot made a rude gesture.

“The vehicles then pulled alongside each other at the roundabout on Lloyds Road and the driver of the van spoke to the passenger in the Peugeot who then got out and punched the front windscreen of the van, causing it to smash.”

The offender is described as being olive-skinned, in his mid-thirties, about 5ft 8in with a stocky build.

He had short, black, slicked-back greasy hair and dark stubble.
