A man from Brixworth charged with the manslaughter of a homeless man has been remanded in custody.

Robert Spearman, aged 43, of Highfield Close, Brixworth, appeared in Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after he was charged with the manslaughter of Robert Gardner.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said Mr Gardner was assaulted on Thursday, June 9, in Boughton Green Road, Kingsthorpe and died at Northampton General Hospital on Friday, June 24.

Spearman had previously been arrested on suspicion of assaulting Mr Gardner and was released on police bail.

He was re-arrested by Northamptonshire Police on Tuesday with the force claiming “medical evidence” linked the alleged assault to Mr Gardner’s death more than two months earlier.

Spearman spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the short hearing at magistrates court.

District Judge Tim Daber sent the case to Northampton Crown Court. A date for a plea and trial preparation hearing was scheduled to take place on October 5.
