Extensive damage to a gas main along a major route in Northampton will leave the road closed today.
The A5076 Mereway in Northampton shut yesterday afternoon after a gas leak was reported in the central reservation. A main had been damaged by a “third party” according to the National Grid.
A section of the road had to be closed between Tesco and Queen Eleanor roundabout as a result.
However a spokeswoman for the National Grid says repair workers will need to remain on site now for much longer than expected.
Yesterday the spokesman said: “We are going to have to keep it closed tonight and tomorrow.
“As the damage is so extensive we are going to have to cut a damaged section out.
“We will have engineers on site until late tonight and another team will be keeping an eye on the section overnight.
“Engineers will return early tomorrow and will need to work through the day.”
The closure is causing heavy congestion on all surrounding routes.
