Young people create own online graphic novel

A CASH windfall of £20,000 will help fund a project for two groups of young people in Spring Boroughs, Northampton, to work on a digital arts project with Royal & Derngate's creative projects team.

The multi-media project, Hypercom, will enable 30 youngsters of diverse backgrounds to work with digital artists, exploring issues relevant to their own lives.

The project will address public fear and mistrust of young people in Northampton and will also challenge the depiction of young people and crime.

The young people will develop storyboard ideas for a graphic novel, with a number of alternative storylines branching out.

Working with actors, directors, photographers, digital artists, graphic designers and a music producer, the young people will convert their storyboards into a multiple-narrative online graphic novel.

The end result will be a website where users get to choose different options for their characters, making them feel as though they have created their own story.

The website will be launched at an event organised and hosted by the young people in a Northampton nightclub.

Alex Soulsby, Royal & Derngate’s creative projects manager, said: “As well as being an exciting, hands-on multi-media experience for everyone involved, Hypercom serves as a valuable and all too necessary platform for the voice of Northampton’s youth.”

This project follows on from Hyperplay and is supported by 2,000 funding from Northampton Borough Council.
