Young leaders will be jetting off to Mediterranean
A team of young leaders from Northampton will be flying out to Malta next month to take part in a sports festival.
Over the past month, pupils from nine primary schools and three secondary schools have been training for the week-long sports gala on the Mediterranean island.
The youngsters will take part in tag rugby, football, sailing, athletics, mini-basketball and swimming activities and attend cultural trips and visits.
They were chosen because they were identified as young sports leaders and include children from St Andrew's CEVA, Lings, The Arbours, Thorplands and Rectory Farm Primary Schools. The trip itself has been organised by the Northampton School Sports Partnership (NSSP).
Natalie Lawrence, partnership development manager for NSSP, said: "We are taking 18 year six pupils and three sixth formers, who all form part of the Northampton Academy, Thomas Becket and Weston Favell Schools clusters, to Malta.
"We were invited out to the island by the University of Malta through a connection with one of the NSSP co-ordinators.
"Rather than representing different nations, the children will be competing in mixed groups with pupils from a Maltese school which will give them a chance to make new friends."
The trip has been mainly paid for by a 3,000 contribution from Northamptonshire County Council Empowering Councillors and Community Scheme and 2,000 from the Wilson Foundation.
They will fly out on June 19. It is hoped the schoolchildren from Malta will come to Northampton next year in return.
Miss Lawrence said: "The sports jamboree is a wonderful opportunity for the children and for the NSSP to work with different partners. For many pupils, it will be their first trip abroad."
