World record rugby match planned

An ambitious attempt to create a world record for the highest number of players ever to take part in a rugby union exhibition match will take place in Towcester on Easter Saturday.

Towcestrians Rugby Football Club has organised the event which, it is hoped, will be validated by a local solicitor who will act as an adjudicator for Guinness World Records.

To claim the world record, a rugby match is planned at the ground in Greens Norton Road, which will last for six hours with a series of "rolling" substitutions involving junior and senior players from a number of Northamptonshire teams.

The world record attempt is part of a two-day beer and music festival which will be raising money for Help the Heroes, The Royal British Legion and The Wooden Spoon.

Towcestrians spokesman David Taylor, who came up with the idea for the world record attempt, said: "It is a new category and has never been done before.

"It is very exciting and we have an action-packed programme with lots of things going on all day."

The rugby match will start at noon on Easter Saturday with two teams, possibly Latter Day Saints XV versus Towcestrians RFC, and these teams will be replaced in an on-going series of "rolling substitutions" during each match until all players have finished playing or until the Guinness World Record is established.

Other activities planned to take place on Saturday are a pre-match performance by The Mercian Regiment Marching Band and a display by the Military Vehicle Trust and the Royal British Legion.

The beer festival will start on Friday, April 2 at 7pm and will include a disco and food stalls. The beers have been all been specially selected and will be sold at affordable prices.

Bands performing during the event include popular local acts such as The Bromptons, High 5 and Reflexions and barbecue food will be available during the day with a pig roast in the evening.

The Royal Ghurkha Rifles, Sandhurst, Catering Corp will also be at the rugby club preparing their own special Nepalese curries from a catering marquee.
