AN 89-year old woman is in a critical condition following an accident on the A43 near Towcester last night.
The accident happened at about 5pm on the northbound section of the A43 just past the A5 Towcester roundabout.
A green Volkswagen Polo and a grey Jaguar collided at the junction that leads to Tiffield.
The 89-year-old driver of the Polo, from Greens Norton, was taken to Walsgrave Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
The 43-year-old Jaguar driver, who was from Northampton, was taken to Northampton General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
The woman was trapped in her vehicle and had stopped breathing when the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) arrived at the scene at 5.52pm.
The woman had to be removed from her vehicle by the fire service.
A doctor assessed her at the scene and decided her condition was too unstable for a general anaesthetic.
