Windows smashed on cars for sale at roadside
People living in an area of Northampton blighted by unauthorised car sales have condemned vandals who smashed up the vehicles, but said they understood people's anger.
Last week, the Chron revealed residents in Abington were angry because the lay-bys and parking bays around the park contained more than 20 cars for sale.
And yesterday, a number of vehicles which contained For Sale signs had their windows smashed.
Abington resident Paul Woodcock spotted the damaged cars on Monday morning.
He said: "I know these people are only trying to make a living by selling cars but, talking to my neighbours, a lot of people are very upset about it.
"Going round smashing windows is certainly no way to deal with it, but maybe when they see what's happened, it will stop them trying to sell the cars here."
The councillor for the Abington area, Councillor Brian Hoare (Lib Dem, Abington) also acknowledged people were very upset by the unauthorised car lots.
He said: "The cars are creating a problem and there are a lot of people who are upset by what they're doing.
"But it's clearly not right for people to take the law into their own hands.
"I certainly can't condone vandalism, however I can understand the concern of the residents."
Cars which were hit by the vandals all had their windows smashed. But many of the owners of the vehicles were unaware of the attacks.
When the Chron called three of the mobile phone numbers displayed in three car windows yesterday afternoon, none of the owners were aware their vehicles had been targeted.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said reports of the vandalism had now been passed to policing teams in the Abington area.
He said: "We were called just after midday on Monday and told about 10 cars had been vandalised in Wellingborough Road and Lime Avenue.
"It has now been passed on to our safer community team for the area."
In an attempt to tackle the parking problems, Northampton Borough Council is also looking at bringing in 100 fines for people who try to sell two or more cars at the roadside.
Northamptonshire County Council is also considering whether more parts of the town can have residents' parking schemes and time-limited parking bays.
