Why we need to take a stand
Reports that the British National Party standing in the East Midlands constituency for the European elections (which includes Northamptonshire) comes as no surprise.
Its current rise to prominence, following the violence in northern towns in 2001, should be a time for reflection as we commemorate the genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 40s (Holocaust Memorial Day) tomorrow.
Let there be no doubt that the BNP (despite its protests to the contrary) is a neo-fascist/racist party
Do we really want a society riddled with hatred and violence?
I fully endorse the leaders of Wellingborough, Corby and Kettering Councils:
"I hope they get slaughtered at the polls" (Eileen Higgins, Wellingborough Council, Conservative).
"In this day and age there is no need for their politics" (Willie Smith, Corby Council, Labour).
"I believe their extreme views are unhelpful to social harmony" (Terry Freer, Kettering Council, Conservative).
Such political unity on this important issue is very welcome.
It has been said that it only takes the silence of good people for evil to triumph.
The clear statements against the BNP, by these local political leaders, are to be commended.
We now need everyone of goodwill to take a similar stand.
