When two dog walkers spotted UFO over town
Secret details of an unexplained sighting of an object flying at 'incredible speeds' over Northamptonshire have been released by the Ministry of Defence.
Two dog walkers saw the object, which was covered in lights, hovering over Kettering in 1993 before it reportedly shot off at speeds far faster than any aircraft.
The friends reported the sighting to police who then passed details onto the Ministry of Defence, who were unable to provide any explanation.
Today details of the sighting, along with hundreds more spanning from 1981 to 1996, have been declassified by the Government department that deals with UFO files, allowing access by the public via the National Archives website.
Two separate files which record the sighting describe how the two were walking their dogs near the college in St Mary's Road, in Kettering town centre, on the night of August 24 when they saw a large, silent, 'frisbee' shape covered in green and red lights low in the sky.
The pair said it moved slowly for a few minutes before seemingly turning towards them then shooting off "faster than the fastest jet", after which they lost sight of it behind the college building.
In a letter written two days after the sighting, one of the unnamed dog walkers told the Ministry of Defence the pair were "still discussing our experience of the sighting of the brilliant object flying so low" and enclosed a drawing of what they saw.
The author of the files, who corresponded with the witness at the time, wrote that he had contacted someone or some group whose name is not revealed and had confirmed that: "Airship was not flying last night (the night of the sighting)."
He goes on to say that he had passed the details of UFO groups to the witnesses who he said would be informed if the MoD "found anything out."
He also added that: "They'll watch out for local papers etc. and let me know if there are any other reports."
The files conclude with a standard letter sent to the witness saying the object would not be further investigated as it was not considered a threat to UK security.
It summed up: "There are many strange things to be seen in the sky, although we believe explanations could be found for most of them."
