Webchat will put Chron in spotlight

Internet users will be able to gain an unusual insight into how the Chronicle & Echo is put together tomorrow, with a pioneering day-long web chat showcasing the work of our newsroom.

As part of the experiment, visitors to our website will be able to play their part in shaping the content of the paper, see at first hand how stories are put together and learn more about life in the Chron newsroom.

"The experiment is believed to be the first of its kind undertaken by any UK regional newspaper.

News editor Daniel Owens will be leading the web chat, which will see readers given the chance to interact with Chron journalists and air their views on stories appearing in the following day's newspaper.

Chron editor David Summers said: "Hopefully this will prove to be a way in which we can really engage with our readers and get them involved in their local paper.

"The technology is called Cover-it Live and has been used with great success by our sports desk in recent weeks to help cover both Saints and Cobblers away games.

"We wanted to do a similar thing with the newsdesk and thought it would be an ideal way of allowing readers to get in touch and find out what goes on in the Chron newsroom every day, from covering dramatic news stories to endless arguments over whose turn it is to make the tea.

"We will be explaining what stories we are covering, why we are covering them and how we are writing them. But it will also give readers the chance to meet and learn about the characters who write the stories in their favourite local paper."

The Chron is keen to interact with readers at every opportunity, and our Twitter site - also run by Mr Owens - has proved extremely popular with more than 1,240 followers, making it one of the most successful in the UK newspaper industry.

The webchat will take a similar format to our Twitter postings, with an entertaining, irreverent look at life inside our Upper Mounts HQ.

To take part in the webchat log on to www.northamptonchron.co.uk from 8.30am on Friday and follow the links.
