Village prepares for new battle

Villagers have vowed to continue fighting plans to build a towering wind farm near the Naseby battlefield, saying the campaign has already attracted international support.

Electricity giant E.ON has now formally submitted plans to build seven giant wind turbines on land owned by Kelmarsh Hall, close to the historic site of the Battle of Naseby.

Historians from around the world have already condemned the plans, saying they would ruin one of Britain's most important historical sites.

Now the local campaign group, Stop Kelmarsh Wind Farm Action Group, has said the plans would be a "desecration" of the area.

In a statement the group said: "The proposed turbines will dominate the scene of the most important battle of the English Civil War.

"As high as the Express Lift Tower, they will dominate the historic landscape, towering over the listed hall and its registered gardens and the four other scheduled ancient monuments which surround the hall.

"Stop Kelmarsh Wind Farm Action Group intends to defend the Northamptonshire countryside and the local communities of Haselbech, Kelmarsh, Naseby, Clipston, Arthingworth and Maidwell against this proposed desecration."

E.ON has said the 413ft tall wind turbines will provide enough electricity to power the homes of almost 8,000 families.

But the protest group's chairman, Derryn Rolfe, said the opposition was now highly organised and ready for a fight.

She said: "It is very important we have clean electricity and we will always be accused of being NIMBYs but this is a question of putting it in the right place.

"We will be putting forward a full critique and rebuttal of what has been put forward. We have known this was coming for some time so we have been quite lucky to have the advantage of time and get some of our consultants ready."

She added the group has also received support from scholars in Europe and America.
