Village plans 'the new Balloon Festival'
Fans of the abandoned Northampton Balloon Festival will not miss out this summer after organisers of a community event in Wootton revealed it would have its own display.
The third annual Walk in the Park event, at Wootton Community and Sports Centre, in Curtlee Hill, will feature three balloon crews at the two-day festival, which will now include two evening balloon glows and an early-morning balloon launch.
Stewart Bartley, Wootton and East Hunsbury parish councillor, has been in charge of organising the event after its inaugural year, when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the community centre, costing the authority 36,000.
Mr Bartley said: "It's really good news. I think the balloon festival is going to be missed so every opportunity to launch a few balloons will help.
"The fact of the matter is the balloonists wanted to launch from somewhere.
"It also gives us a slightly different angle to work from and we're trying to get a few more. Even if the weather lets us down, at least we'll get the glow out of them."
The summer event, which will take place on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, will also include a performance from X-Factor finalist, Laura White, as well as an evening of tribute bands to Girls Aloud, Take That and Christina Aguilera.
Organisers have encouraged school groups to get involved with the community event, which will be raising money for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
Mr Bartley said members of a youth project at Blacky More would be taking to the stage during the weekend, which last year attracted 3,000 people.
Entry to the event on Saturday, July 4 is free but the tribute night on Friday is by ticket-only, costing 8 for adults, 5 for children or 24 for a family ticket.
