Village school's new building arrives in style
A tiny village school in Northamptonshire has taken delivery of a new £45,000 multi-use building to help provide extra facilities for children and the community.
Traffic in Stoke Bruerne, in the south of the county, was virtually brought to a standstill when a 25-tonne low loader carrying a 90-foot long prefabricated building was brought onto the site of Stoke Bruerne CE Primary School.
The lorry entered the school, via a neighbour's private drive, with only inches to spare. Builders used a crane to lift the two units onto a plot in the school garden, taking up the whole of the morning.
Headteacher Janis Zankis said: "We are a small village school with only 42 pupils and have only limited facilities on site in the form of two classrooms, a kitchen/library and office.
"The school has wanted to expand for some time but because the building is in a conservation area we were restricted as to where we could extend and came up with the idea of a separate building."
Mr Zakis said the extension, when fully furnished, will have a small room, kitchen, a baby changing unit and a disabled toilet. The building has been mainly paid for by the school's own funds and a 15,000 grant from Northamptonshire County Council.
The Extended Schools programme is a Government initiative encouraging schools to offer care from 8am to 6pm by working with the local authority and other organisations.
Mr Zakis said: "The builders had to lay down a special metal track to support the weight of the lorry, the day before the big delivery.
"Because we had problems getting the low loader through the private drive, a gate post was removed and replaced with the owner's permission, who has been very understanding towards our situation."
