Village debates aqua park idea

A village in Northamptonshire could become the home of a European-style aqua park with slides, water jets and small pools if funding is secured for the ambitious project.

Brixworth Parish Council has agreed to explore whether it could attract European funding which would enable the building of an aqua park, similar to one visited by a parish councillor while he was on holiday in the Czech Republic.

The scheme is only an idea at present and no plot of land has even been suggested for where to build it, but if successful it is thought it could bring money and jobs to the village.

Parish councillor Michael Lacey approached his colleagues with the proposal after visiting a park in Olomouc.

He said: "I think what appeals to me is having something for kids in the village to use, rather than standing around.

"It didn't hit me as an idea immediately but then I thought 'what a pity we don't have anything like that in Brixworth or Northampton.

"Really it's just an idea and you can't run before you can walk.

"The bottom line is it's just an idea until you have the possibilty of funding. All the parish council agreed to was to see if there might be a possibility of funding it.

"If there is then we would have to decide where to build it."

But Brixworth resident Frank Wiig said he did not think the building of an aqua park was a scheme suitable for a village.

He said: "Brixworth is the largest village in the district and we've been fighting against expansion because we don't want to lose village status.

"This has not been well thought out.

"It would be great for Northampton, a big town, but there's no infrastructure in Brixworth.

"The roads would have to be widened and they don't even know where it's going to go.

"Swimming pools in the country are making a loss and I don't think Brixworth is the right location."
