Staff at a Northampton distribution depot are hoping to raise more than £1,500 today for a local cancer charity through its annual five-a-side tournament.

More than 30 employees from Howdens’ Joinery distribution centre, based at Brackmills, are battling it out at the Mereway Goals football centre to raise money for the charity Crazy Hats.

It is the third annual tournament held by the firm with six teams competing for the trophy.

Site manager for the distribution depot Tim Grantham, said: “Howdens is a local business and this is about staying local and making sure we support local causes.

“It’s a voluntary organisation that creates an awful lot of comfort to for a lot of people.

“Today’s about a bunch of guys having a bit of fun and raising some good money for charity.”

Among the players today is captain of the MK Dons womens’ team Hannah Barrett.

Crazy Hats, now in its 13th year, has raised almost £2million towards breast cancer care in the county, with the majority of that money going to Northampton and Kettering general hospitals.

A raffle is being held today with a top prize of a 42 inch plasma television.
