Vice girl turned her life around
A former prostitute from Northampton has said a charity designed to help the area's vice girls has helped her to completely turn her life around.
The young mother, who has asked not to be identified, spoke with the shadow women's minister Theresa May during her visit yesterday.
She told her that, without the help she received from the Sex Workers Around Northamptonshire (SWAN) project, she would still be working on the streets and taking drugs.
The 22-year-old who worked as a prostitute for five years, said: "They've been very helpful to me, helping me with treatment for my drug use and with things like benefits.
"If they'd not been here, I'd probably still be stuck down there doing the same things I'd been doing," she added.
"I'd been working out there when I was underage, but the people from SWAN took me away from that and really helped me. They've really helped me turn my life around."
During her visit to the town centre project, the minister said it was a good example of the way to tackle the problem of prostitution.
She said: "I think this is a very positive approach and the right way to do things.
"The people I've spoken to want more stable lives, and the SWAN project has enabled them to do that."
The SWAN project was set up to provide a place where vice girls can get the help and advice they need to get out of prostitution and improve their lives.
