Van’s passenger airlifted to hospital following crash on A14
A passenger in a van was airlifted to hospital this morning after the vehicle he was travelling in collided with an Italian lorry.
The eastbound carriageway of the A14 between junctions 1 and 2 was closed for several hours after a crash
The incident happened at 6.15am and fire crews needed to rescue the 48-year-old passenger who was trapped inside the white Ford Transit flatbed van.
Both carriageways of the A14 were closed while the air ambulance landed and the injured man was flown to the Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry.
A police spokesman said: “A white Ford Transit flatbed van was in collision with the rear of a broken down, Italian-registered articulated lorry.
“As a result of the collision, the passenger in the van - a 48-year-old man from Brierley Hill in the West Midlands - sustained serious internal injuries and was airlifted by air ambulance to the Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry.
“The driver of the van - a 49-year-old man from Brierley Hill in the West Midlands - and the driver of the lorry - a 51-year-old man from Colleferro, Italy - did not sustain serious injuries.”
Police are keen to contact the driver of the car that was overtaking the van as it approached the lorry.
