University welcomes increase in funding

An increase in funding of 2.6 per cent for The University of Northampton has been described as a "tribute to the institution's leadership" by one of the town's MPs.

Labour MP for Northampton North, Sally Keeble, welcomed the news that the university would receive a total grant of 28,366,000 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for the 2010-11 academic year, up from 27,936,000 in 2009.

The university has fared better than many others who have received cuts in cash, such as the University of Birmingham, which has had a 1.2 per cent funding cut, and London Business School, which has had a 11.9 per cent grant decrease.

Mrs Keeble, who wrote to Peter Mandelson earlier this month pressing for an easing of the financial pressures on The University of Northampton, said: "Our university in Northampton has done incredibly well in establishing itself academically and financially, and in building good links with the business community. The continued financial support is a tribute to the university's leadership.

"The coming years are going to be difficult for public services, including higher education. However, The University of Northampton is well-placed to withstand the difficulties, and is a real flagship for the town.

"It is important in driving up educational achievements in Northampton and creating opportunities for high-skilled businesses. I want to see higher education continue to expand and will be supporting the position of the universities."

Mark Ferguson, head of communications at The University of Northampton, said the university was "cautiously optimistic" about the financial announcement by the HEFCE.

He said: "It will take a short while for us to review this outcome and we expect to make a further announcement in the future."
