University in pilot 'end of year' report scheme
The University of Northampton is to take part in pilot scheme which will give students an "end of year report".
Eighteen institutions have signed up for the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) which will be given to students when they complete their degrees.
The reports will give information on a student's achievement throughout their time at university, such as a breakdown of grades by modules and details of areas in which they have excelled.
They will be given alongside a graduate's traditional final degree grade, and aim to give employers and higher education institutions more information about graduates.
The new scheme follows a report by the Burgess Group published last year which recommended introducing a single document for measuring and recording student achievement.
Across the 18 universities taking part, there will be trials in four subjects of english, biology, accounting and creative arts and it is hoped other universities will join the scheme in 2010.
Professor Robert Burgess, vice-chancellor of Leicester University and chair of the Burgess Group said: "Throughout our discussions we have always sought to do justice to the achievement of students and improve the way in which universities demonstrate the wide range of their achievements.
"We are delighted that so many institutions have agreed to trial the HEAR with the involvement of students and employers.
"This will give us an opportunity to see if the proposals add value and are practical. I look forward to seeing the results."
The trial institutions include the Universities of Northampton, Leicester, St Andrews, Manchester; Newcastle, University College London, Aberystwyth and Cardiff University.
