University and police fight crime
Forensic researchers at the University of Leicester and Northamptonshire Police are developing new ways to capture criminals.
The collaboration between the University's Forensic Research Centre and the police force's Scientific Support Unit, which has already produced ground-breaking results, will be formally launched on May 14.
Projects the organisations have been working on include analysing lead to help trace metal thieves and fingerprint analysis.
Northamptonshire's Deputy Chief Constable, Davina Logan, said: "I am really excited about this opportunity for our own scientists in Northamptonshire Police to work with their colleagues at the University of Leicester and to build on recent innovations in the use of forensic science to detect crime.
"A research collaboration of this kind between a police force and university is, I believe, unique in the UK."
Research projects are led by Dr John Bond, manager of the force's scientific support unit and an Honorary Fellow of the Leicester Forensic Research Centre.
Dr Bond said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for our two organisations to build on the close working relationship we have enjoyed for a number of years.
"I am confident that, together, we can greatly enhance the use of forensic science to detect crime on behalf of the communities of Northamptonshire."
