Tune in to see MEND success
Millions of TV viewers will see an award-winning Northamptonshire healthy family lifestyle programme feature on prime time television at 7pm tonight.
BBC1's The One Show will feature Northamptonshire MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition . . . Do It!), which won a national award for partnership working last November.
MEND is a 10-week programme that uses techniques developed by health experts to help seven to 13-year-olds who are above the healthy weight range for their age and height, and their parents or carers learn about food and discover fun ways to get fit.
It is co-ordinated by NHS Northamptonshire Provider Services, working with staff from local borough and district councils and leisure centres and has so far helped 150 children and their families.
Families take part in fun two-hour sessions, twice a week for 10 weeks. Rather than focusing on weight loss, the programme uses a practical interactive learning approach to teach children and their parents weight management skills.
The One Show item will feature Jack, an obese child who had gastric band surgery at 16, interviewing an eating disorder specialist, a gastric band surgeon, a person thinking of having the surgery, and participants from the MEND programme in Wellingborough.
Kerrie Pearson, MEND coordinator for NHS Northamptonshire Provider Services, said: "It is fantastic to get this national prime-time coverage.
"Northamptonshire MEND really is going from strength to strength.
"It all started with the national award in November, then we recently had a visit from Andrew Lansley, the shadow Health Secretary, and now this national coverage.
"We are delighted that Northamptonshire MEND continues to be held up at a national level as an example of good practice.
"MEND makes a huge difference to the quality of life for not only children but also their families."
