Tudor manor house is put up for sale for £1m
A centuries-old Grade I-listed Tudor manor house in a Northamptonshire village, believed to have once been the home of a relative of William Shakespeare, has gone on the market with a price tag of more than £1 million.
The house, in Church Lane, Great Doddington, was built in 1510 and boasts a host of original features alongside eight bedrooms, four reception rooms, a separate annexe and walled gardens.
Built in a half 'H' shape that was typical of the era, the house is believed to have been at one time home to the granddaughter of William Shakespeare, Elizabeth, whose husband John Barnard is said to have inherited the house from his ancestor and namesake, who built it.
Stuart Headland, manager of Michael Graham, agents marketing the property, said the manor house's sale represented an "exceptional" opportunity for buyers. He said: "This is a historically fabulous building. It's 500 years old this year and it's unusual in so much as you don't get many properties of this age to the market.
"We sell a lot of properties that are old, beautiful and characterful but I would say this one is exceptional in its size and age. I don't think you get many of these in private hands."
Mr Headland said the house would have broad appeal to buyers, but admitted its price tag of 1,150,000 would put many off.
He said: "This is a family house. It has eight bedrooms, lovely gardens and an annexe so it has appeal for an extended family.
"I think it's got a great range of appeal. The only thing for us when we're trying to find a buyer for it is that with properties of its age, their upkeep comes into the equation. It's not like a new build where you haven't got to spend money on it.
"We've had good interest, particularly from people specifically interested in period properties.
"It's a really interesting house and it would make a beautiful home."
