A tree smashed through roof of a house in Northampton as strong winds brought drown a number of trees and power lines across the county on Friday night.

The home in St James suffered substantial damage as winds reached up to 60mph.

Residents of Bostock Avenue, Abington, Northampton woke his morning to find a large tree had been uprooted from the pavement and had fallen across the road, taking out power lines.

Nobody was injured by the tree but a car suffered bad damage.

The county was buffeted by gales of up to 60mph on Friday night and the emergency services were called out to 11 incidents of trees falling down, including Delapre Abbey where the entrance was blocked by a fallen tree.

Northants Road Policing Unit tweeted at 12.30am: “We currently have at least eight trees down across Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. More are still been phoned in.”

A tree that fell across a road in Silverstone took out the power lines in the village.

The Northants RPU said that despite there being lots of incidents involving trees falling there were no reports of anyone being injured.
