Tragic death of popular sportsman in car crash
Friends of a 20-year-old cricketer who died in a car crash have described the loss of a sporty, fun-loving young man.
Police revealed yesterday that Woodford Halse Cricket Club member Daniel Worrall died at the wheel of his car just yards from his home in Byfield Road, Woodford Halse, on Saturday night.
Today, more than 300 friends had joined a tribute site set up in his memory on social networking website Facebook.
Kate Peacock wrote: "You were the only reason I would go and watch cricket. You're going to be missed more than you know."
Kerrie McCormack added: "We're missing you already. You were always there with that smile that could melt hearts."
Other friends described how difficult it was to come to terms with Daniel's death.
Katrina Darby wrote: "I still can't believe I won't see that cheeky smile ever again. You will be missed by everyone that knew you, the world is a much worse place without you in it."
On his MySpace page, Mr Worrall, who recently started a job as an apprentice electrician, described his interests as football, cricket and golf.
He had featured in the Chronicle & Echo in 2002 when he followed in his father's footsteps by qualifying as a referee aged only 13, despite seeing his father suffer a violent attack just weeks before taking his final qualifications.
Kevin Worrall was left with a shattered cheekbone and eye socket when a disgruntled player punched him at the end of "friendly" match at Daventry Leisure Centre.
One of the first people on the scene was Daniel, then aged 13, who saw his father's face and eye pouring with blood.
Two operations rebuilt Mr Worrall's broken bones, but surgeons were unable to save the sight in one eye.
Speaking at the time, father Kevin said: "Daniel was very upset. When it all happened he had got several more weeks to go before taking his referee's exam, we discussed it and I asked him whether he wanted to continue, he said he wanted to go ahead and he passed."
Police said the accident happened at about 7.45pm on Saturday when the blue Ford Fiesta Daniel was driving left the road and struck a tree.
A family friend said Daniel's parents had been on holiday abroad when the accident happened and returned to the tragic news on Sunday.
