Town centre noise over gay rights
Protesters gathered at Northampton Guildhall to make a big noise about gay rights.
Northampton Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Alliance organised the protest as part of the International Day Against Homophobia on Saturday.
Protesters wanted to make as much noise as possible to raise awareness of gay or bisexual people who are persecuted for their sexuality across the world.
Andrew Bowers, NLGBA director, said: "There are still 86 countries in the world which regard homosexuality as a criminal offence, and seven maintain the death penalty.
"Rather than hold a silence today we wanted to make as much noise as possible on behalf of the people who have to stay silent."
The event was supported by Northampton Borough Council and Northamptonshire County Council, and rainbow flags were raised outside the Guildhall and County Hall.
Northampton's mayor, Councillor Lee Mason (Lab, Lumbertubs), said: "It is very important we remember people across the world who are still persecuted for their sexuality."
And Northamptonshire County Councillor Richard Church (Lib Dem, Kingsley) added: "There are still many people we need to shout for and make their voices heard. It's a great pleasure to see the flags flying outside County Hall and the Guildhall."
