Town's Vietnamese restaurant featured in Michelin guide
A Vietnamese restaurant in Northampton's Wellingborough Road has been named as the town's only entry in the foodies' bible, The Michelin Guide.
Dang's takes pride of place after it was flagged up by inspectors working for the acclaimed hotel and restaurant guide.
The eatery, which only opened in 2007, is described as "an immaculately furnished contemporary Vietnamese restaurant. Passionately run, food is fresh, tasty, good value and mostly homemade. Noodle bowls are a speciality."
Owner of Dang's, Hao Dang, said: "I am overwhelmed. It's really fantastic to be the only one to be recommended and I'm absolutely ecstatic with the news. We've changed the signs outside and put stickers on the windows to let everyone know.
"We were surprised to be recommended but then again we weren't absolutely shocked.
"I have always been in the catering business. I have had Chinese takeaways and experimented with Chinese, Thai and Mediterranean. Food has been my passion for more than 30 years.
"A lot of people don't know what Vietnamese food is like and are a bit cautious but it's like a cross between Chinese and Thai."
Elsewhere, Northamptonshire has a relatively small number of entries in the 2010 guide. Fawsley Hall, near Daventry, is classed as a "luxurious" Tudor manor house set in 2,000 acres with an "ambitious" menu in its flagship restaurant Equilibrium, where meals cost from 59 per head.
The Vine House at Paulerspury receives a favourable write-up with inspectors describing the menu packed with "refined, flavoursome dishes with a classical base and modern edge".
The Roade House at Roade makes this year's guide, with Michelin praising the "personally run" former village pub and schoolhouse for producing food sourced from local producers and set menus that offer "classical cooking with modern touches".
And in the south of the county, at Aynho, the newly modernised Cartwright is said to boast "a seasonal menu of robust dishes".
The only other county venues to make this year's guide are the Luxury Lodge at Stanwick, the Falcon Inn at Fotheringhay and Castle Farm, a guesthouse in the same village. The Pheasant at Keyston, near Thrapston - which recently featured in Gordon Ramsay's F-Word programme on Channel 4 - is also given a favourable mention.
The nearest Michelin-starred restaurants are Mallory Court, near Leamington Spa, Hambleton Hall, near Oakham and The Olive Branch at Clipsham, near Stamford. The Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland is on sale now, priced 15.99.
