Town prepares for carnival fun
Northampton will be awash with colour on Saturday for the town's annual carnival.
Up to 40 colourful floats are expected to parade from London Road in Far Cotton towards the town centre and then back to Delapre Park on Saturday, between 2pm and 4.30pm.
As a result, the majority of roads in the town centre, including Bridge Street, St Giles Street and St Giles Terrace, will be closed by 1pm, with a number of diversions in place.
The theme for the carnival, now in its fifth year, is The Sole of the People, which aims to reflect the town's history of boot and shoe production.
As part of the celebrations Delapre Park will be hosting a family fun day from midday, with live entertainment, a funfair, trade stalls, a skate park, quad bikes, a snake charmer and a bouncy castle.
The parade, to be opened by the new mayor of Northampton Michael Hill, will begin at 2pm, returning to the park at around 4.30pm.
On return. the winners of the best designed float, troupe and costumes will be announced, along with the Anne Frank Community Awards.
In the afternoon and evening, there will be performances from acts including the Royal & Derngate Community Choir, youth band The Zion Lions, Chaplins Stage School and European dance group Dance Vybz.
n ONE of the music industry's best known bands will perform at Northampton's first official music festival, organised to coincide with the carnival weekend.
The Blockheads, formerly fronted by the late Ian Dury, will start a national tour at the festival, which runs from Friday until Sunday in the town centre and will include a carnival party at the Picturedrome in Kettering Road from 8pm on Saturday.
As part of the festival the Market Square will host an afternoon and evening of free music from 2pm on Sunday with The Blockheads as headliners.
