Three Shires Hospital in £3m facelift

A private hospital in Northampton is undergoing a £3 million worth of major improvements to its oncology and MRI scanning departments plus minor operation rooms.

The work is being carried out at the BMI Three Shires Hospital, which is off The Avenue, near Cliftonville.

It will create several new facilities, including a new MRI scanning suite, a minor operations suite, a physiotherapy department with gymnasium, an oncology and chemotherapy suite, an additional X-ray room, consulting rooms and several new offices.

Paul McPartlan, the executive director of the hospital, said: "The build will provide the hospital with modern and state of the art facilities, ensuring that our patients are receiving the highest quality of care.

"We can't wait to see what the hospital will look like once the build is completed in March."

And Mr McPartlan said the refurbishment will boost jobs for Northamptonshire's construction industry, which has been ailing in the economic downturn, as county construction firms are being used.

He said: "It will be an exciting event not only for the hospital but also for the local community, as local contractors are responsible for a majority of the refurbishment."

Three Shires Hospital is part of BMI Healthcare, which provides independent healthcare at more than 60 hospitals in the UK.

Consultants undertake a wide range of procedures, from routine investigations to complex surgery.

BMI said that as the only non-NHS general hospital in Northampton, Three Shires warranted an upgrade.

A spokeswoman said: "We are refurbishing BMI Three Shires hospital, as it is the only private hospital in Northampton. It will enable us to expand our services and provide the most modern clinical facilities for the people in the area."

Three Shires sits not far from the town's NHS acute hospital, Northampton General, but sees far fewer patients in an average year.

Last year, Three Shires treated more than 5,200 patients, whereas NGH saw at least 230,000 excluding repeat appointments.

While the renovations are being conducted at BMI Three Shires Hospital, its outpatient services are being provided at The Pavilion Clinic, on the Brackmills Industrial Estate.
