Teenager fighting for his life after street attack

A 19-year-old man is fighting for his life after a row in a Northamptonshire town centre street.

Police believe the victim was involved in an argument with a man and a woman in a car on Elizabeth Street, Corby, before being found with serious head injuries several hundred yards away in West Glebe Park.

The teenager is in a "very critical" condition at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Police officers investigating the incident believe the argument took place opposite the police station in Corby before the man walked to the park and collapsed.

A police spokesman said: "Early indications were that there were no suspicious circumstances around the man's injuries, however, as a result of inquiries, police now believe the man may have been involved in an altercation, possibly with a man and a woman in a car, opposite the police station in Elizabeth Street on Wednesday afternoon.

"Police are keeping an open mind about how the man came by his injuries but would like to hear as soon as possible from anyone who was in Elizabeth Street on Wednesday and may have seen an altercation."

The incident happened between 4pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday.

David Harley, chairman of the Friends of West Glebe Park group, said: "I'm very surprised, shocked and concerned about an incident of that nature happening in the vicinity of the park. It sounds like the injuries are serious.

"There are two CCTV cameras in the park that I hope have been helpful to the police."

Snatchill resident John Douglas, 59, said: "I'm shocked. It's absolutely ridiculous. But at least it seems like an isolated incident in Corby. "

Anyone who may have seen the row or saw the man in West Glebe Park is asked to call police on 08453 700700.
