TV presenter Tess Daly will be helping to celebrate the actions of a man who saved a toddler from drowning at a Northampton caravan park.
Simon Underwood, aged 40, from Ecton, has been shortlisted for the St John Ambulance’s annual award ceremony in London, on Wednesday, March 26.
As reported exclusively in the Chron at the time, Mr Underwood saved the life of a toddler at Billing Aquadrome in August 2013. He resuscitated the 15-month-old child, after he was found floating in a stream.
Mr Underwood, who is assistant head teacher at Oxford Academy, rushed to the scene after hearing the distressed cries of family members searching for the boy. The child was spotted in the water not far from where his family were camping.
When Mr Underwood got to him, the boy was not breathing and showed no signs of life. Mr Underwood started delivering CPR and sustained it for between three to four minutes.
Thanks to his efforts, Mr Underwood managed to get the child breathing again before the ambulance arrived. The child was taken to hospital and kept in intensive care, where it is believed he then went on to make a full recovery.
Mr Underwood had picked up the first aid skills he used after watching St John Ambulance first aid training session with students at his former school.
Each year he had designed a curriculum that ensured all Year 10 students in the school had access to Levels 1 and 2 in basic first aid.
He said: “The nomination alone was very humbling, so to be shortlisted is an honour.
“The whole experience still brings mixed emotions, as I’m sure is the case for anyone who’s been involved with a similar situation.
“I hope the awards, and the other incredible stories of success, can highlight the importance of basic first aid skills. It’s so important that we don’t underestimate the difference that even the smallest amount of knowledge can make.”
The University of Northampton has also been shortlisted in the organisation of the year for first aid excellence category. It is the third year that the university has been shortlisted.
St John Ambulance is searching for the family of the boy who was rescued by Mr Underwood so they can be reunited. They, or anyone who knows who the family are, is asked to call the Chron on Northampton 467033.
