Tailor-made treat for young fashionistas
Budding fashionistas at a Northampton school have strutted their stuff on the catwalk hoping to win the chance to go behind the scenes at London Fashion Week.
Pupils from Caroline Chisholm School, Wootton Fields, modelled their own creations in front of a panel of expert judges from Topshop yesterday, as part of the school's Project Catwalk: Innovation Chic fashion show.
The half-hour show featured 90 students from Years 7 to 10, all of whom spent the week leading up to the show designing and making their own outfit with the help of professionals from Topshop's head office in London.
The girls were also given lessons in modelling to ensure they showed off their designs to the best effect.
Jenna Brook and Ellie Barker were the first models to take to the catwalk.
Jenna, aged 13, of Wootton, said: "This week has been so much fun, working with all my friends to make our own outfits. It was quite challenging at the start to design my dress and I was a bit nervous before I walked down the catwalk but the whole thing has been a lot of fun."
Ellie, aged 15, also of Wootton, said: "This has been a stressful week trying to get everything done in such a short space of time but it's been really fun. It took a whole day to sew all the patches on my costume but it's given me a real taste of what it would be like to work in fashion as well as inspired me to try making my own clothes."
The students paraded outfits designed around three themes – London and New York, Manhattan Cocktail and Horror Girls.
The best designs in each category received a goody bag and 25 Topshop voucher. They will also have the chance to visit Topshop's headquarters during preparations for London Fashion Week.
Miranda Porter, textile teacher and project leader, said: "The show was fantastic. It was very professional and you wouldn't believe it was put on by pupils aged 11 to 15. It's such a fantastic project and the finished product is visually stunning."
