Support for Matt's Match from Doctor Who
Dr Who has thrown his backing behind the Matt's Match campaign, urging as many people as possible to help save the life of his childhood friend.
Matt Smith, the man chosen as the next Dr Who, has backed the campaign to find a bone marrow match for 15-year-old Northampton School for Boys pupil, Matt Herbert.
The 27-year-old actor, who is from Northampton, also went to NSB and grew up in the same road as his younger friend Matt.
He said: "Matthew and I grew up in the same street in Northampton, just three houses apart.
"Although he is younger, we both played ball games in that same street – his was a rugby ball and mine a football.
"We both went to the same junior school and secondary school and we even share the same name."
He added: "Matthew is such a kind, intelligent and fun-loving young man so it is extremely important to me, personally, that he has all the support and help he deserves with his current illness."
The teenager, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in December 2008, faces a race against time to find a suitable bone marrow match for a life- saving transplant operation.
Matt, who has already beaten leukaemia once, found out the illness had returned in September.
He has since been told his survival depends on a bone marrow transplant.
On Saturday the campaign set up to find him a match held the first of several planned testing clinics at Sixfields Stadium.
Organisers say more than 100 people have since been added to the bone marrow national register after giving a simple saliva swab.
However, his famous friend, who will be the 11th Time Lord, has urged even more people to go along to the next clinic, which will be held on Thursday.
Matt Smith said: "Matt desperately needs a compatible bone marrow donor and I would ask you please to support him by taking a simple saliva test to see if you are the one who may be able to help him."
Anyone who wants to be tested has been warned not to eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in the 30 minutes prior to giving a sample.
The next clinic will be held on Thursday night at Old Northamptonians Association in Billing Road, between 5.30pm and 9.30pm.
