Stroke care 'is not good enough'
Stroke care for Northamptonshire patients has been criticised by an MP after hearing the story of a Northampton great grandmother who will feature in a national campaign on the issue.
Maureen Bailey, is one of four stroke victims to be featured in a national report published by the Stroke Association which focuses on the level of aftercare stroke sufferers received.
Following her stroke in February 2009, she spent six months in hospital and the charity claimed she was left less mobile than some stroke patients as a result of not having enough physiotherapy.
Mrs Bailey conveyed her story to Brian Binley, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, at the Stroke Association's Parliamentary reception and the MP said he was shocked by her story.
He has now criticised the "poor levels of support and after care" given to her by NHS Northamptonshire.
Mr Binley said: "I'm convinced Maureen would have progressed more quickly had a focused programme of physiotherapy been delivered earlier and more frequently and I am extremely concerned that this could happen to other people in our area.
"About one in four of us can expect to be victims of stroke in the latter stages of our life and I want to ensure we all receive a better level of care and support than Maureen experienced over the past year."
In the Stroke Association report, Mrs Bailey said: "There was not much communication with a physiotherapist whilst I was in hospital and I can't remember receiving much rehabilitation whilst I was in hospital even though I was in the stroke unit."
Mr Binley will hold talks with NHS Northamptonshire to explore ways of improving the situation for other patients.
A spokesman for NHS Northamptonshire said the trust was currently helping redesign the hospital care and the post-discharge community care that stroke patients received.
